Dungeons consist of multiple floors. The goal of each dungeon is to advance through the dungeon and then find and defeat the monster girl boss.
You will periodically encounter dungeon tiles with mandatory encounters that must be beaten if you wish to pass.
You can tell if you've entered one of these battles because the monsters will have a set of three stars above their heads.
These battles can be spotted ahead of time by the presence of a monster icon.
You're able to escape these battles but you will still have to beat the encounter if you want to pass over the tile.
Beware of holes in dungeon floors. Sometimes these can take you to areas with treasure, but sometimes they will just take you to tricky areas filled with unescapable battles.
You'll also encounter many locked doors, including one locked door in each dungeon that can't be unlocked until much later in the game. Don't worry if you've completed an entire dungeon and still have a door you cannot open.
After defeating the monster girl who acts as the boss of that dungeon, the game will tell you you've beat the dungeon. However, there are still other floors to explore and monster girls to acquire, so you will want to continue exploring dungeons even after defeating the boss.
The top floor of most dungeons is accessed through a special rift. The top floor of these dungeons contains especially difficult enemies and monster girls.
You're also looking for treasure and Harvest Points.
While both spots provide items, there are some important differences:
Treasure chests contain a specific item and can only be opened once. Treasure chests are marked on the map with a treasure chest icon.
Harvest Points contain random items that respawn each time you enter a dungeon. Harvest Points are marked on your map with a plant icon.
Harvest Points periodically may not spawn. If a Harvest Point doesn't spawn when you enter a dungeon, you can simply re-enter the dungeon to make it appear. Harvest Points also respawn if you reload your game.
You'll need to farm Harvest Points for costumes. The best way to do this is find a save point near a Harvest Point and keep reloading your game until you find all the costumes in that dungeon.
During random encounters, keep an eye out for monsters that have a heart icon above their head. These monsters have a chance of dropping a unique costume for a specific monster girl (called a "heart drop").
Each enemy with a heart drop will only drop one specific item and after you have it, they will not drop anything else in the future. Not all enemies have a heart drop variant.
In addition to items, you're also looking for enemy monster girls to recruit.
Enemy monster girls can be found on many dungeon floors. They move in a set pattern on the map, typically in a small area. You know you're approaching an area with a monster girl if the music suddenly changes.
Monster girls are denoted on the map with one of two icons, indicating whether they're a normal strength monster girl or an extra strong monster girl.
If possible, it's a good idea to save before fighting monster girls.
Information about fighting enemy monster girls can be found here.
Note: after defeating a monster girl, future visits to the dungeon will have a pumpkin icon walking the same route the monster girl previously did. These pumpkin icons represent higher difficulty fights. These fights do not have heart drops.
Keep Unlocking Crystals in your inventory. These items can either be found or purchased from shops and they allow you to escape a dungeon immediately. If you don't have one of these, the only way to leave a dungeon is walk all the way back to the first floor and leave through the entrance.
Keep an eye out for save points. Not only do they allow you to save your game, they also refill your HP and SP for free.
Occasionally, you will have a random encounter where you fight an octopus or two. These are rare random encounters and the octopi are worth a high amount of experience and Rub P. They need to be killed quickly though, as they have a chance to flee from battle each turn.
When exploring dungeons, don't be afraid to run back to town for supplies. Dying is not uncommon, especially early on.
